Shaila Akther Bari, age 26

Shaila Bari, Fredericton, N.B., was bludgeoned to death by her estranged husband in her apartment around July 16, 2003. Her battered body was not discovered for almost a week. Shaila had married her husband in Bangladesh in 1995 and later joined him in Fredericton. She became a Canadian citizen and was pursuing a business degree at the University of New Brunswick. Shaila separated from her husband in 2002 and he did not take it well. She told friends she was afraid he would harm her. She changed the locks on her door, warned other tenants not to let him into the building and had tried to get a peace bond. Her husband was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole for 25 years. Shaila’s professors and friends remember her as a hardworking student who was sweet natured and kind. They recall that she was ‘blossoming’ as a person. In her memory, UNB has created a scholarship and planted a tree in front of the business faculty. Shaila is missed by all who knew her.
