The Women We Honour

Rachel Cleghorn, age 48

Rachel Cleghorn, St. Stephen, N.B., was killed on September 4, 1981 as she walked through the parking lot of the tuna plant at Bayside where she worked. Rachel was about to start the midnight shift of picket duty when her estranged husband, who had been waiting in his truck, approached and shot her twice at close range with his rifle. Rachel was dead by the time medical assistance arrived. He was sentenced to ten years in prison for second degree murder. Rachel was the mother of 10 children and raised one grandson as well. She is remembered as a loving and dedicated mother. Her children were her life and Rachel stayed at home when they were young to care for them and teach them right from wrong. Rachel experienced many years of intimation by her husband and being threatened with guns became “a normal part of life for the family”.
