Norma MacRae, age 50

Norma MacRae, Moncton, N.B., was murdered on August 8, 1997 by one of her ex-tenants whom she had befriended. He made sexual advances towards her which she had rejected, warning her not tell the police. Norma felt harassed and terrified and reported to the police that she feared her life was in danger from this man, who had a long criminal record. Norma was brutally beaten and suffocated in her own home. He then stole her bank card and withdrew money from a bank machine. He received a life sentence without parole eligibility for 12 years for the second degree murder. Norma was the mother of two children, and a loving grandmother to two grandchildren. She inspired everyone she met with the belief that they could climb their own "inner mountain". Norma’s family cherishes the time they had with her. "Grieving for her is the price we are paying for having loved her".
